KEYNOTE: ACCELERATING THE CURVE: Agility and the Quest to Improve the Customer Experience

Do business improvement projects in your company sometimes fail to gain traction? Face unexpected barriers and miss the mark on expectations? Stall out before yielding results?

Fortunately, most common root causes of failure can be identified and fixed – even while the project is underway. In this compelling talk, transformational leader Geeta Wilson describes how to maximize your Agile deployments, specifically in the context of improving the customer experience.

To accelerate improvement processes in the entrenched culture of a Fortune 100 company, Wilson and her team use Agile, Scrum, Lean Six Sigma, and Design Thinking to break through barriers and drive rapid results. She describes why things go wrong in a complex project and how to accelerate the curve of change that can take years in a bureaucratic environment, compressing real improvements to months or weeks.

Wilson dares her audience to examine the weaknesses and challenges of their own organizations and corporate routines, accelerating the curve to get projects back on track.

Agile Beyond Technology - Transforming an Advertising Agency

Vistaprint transformed its development teams to Agile, reducing release cycles from 18 months to 3 weeks. Marketing had to move faster to match this pace. The bottlenecks seemed to be in the in-house advertising agency. Could Agile work for them? Yes it could!

Using the Kanban method and the agile mindset, we reduced the lead time for the North American email team from 8 weeks to 9 days. The cycle time dropped from 15 days to 4. Late night and weekend work disappeared. The on-time delivery rate soared and quality did not suffer. Showing that Agile works well outside of software is providing the traction for an enterprise-wide transformation.

This presentation will explain the challenges and the key steps that made this transformation successful and how it led to the Enterprise wide transformation.

Beyond “Easy Agile”: How to Overcome the Challenges of Adopting Agile in Established Enterprises

Many agile methods and strategies are geared towards small teams working in reasonably straightforward situations.  That’s great work if you can get it.  Most enterprises that are adopting agile today have been in operations for decades and sometimes centuries.  They are typically dealing with significant investments in legacy systems and processes that won’t go away any time soon.  They have an existing culture that is usually not-as-agile as it could be and an organization structure that puts up many roadblocks to collaboration.  Their staff members are often overly specialized and many people do not have skills in agile software development techniques, and there are many thoughts as to what needs to be done to improve things, the adoption of agile being one of many.  This is certainly not the startup company environment that we keep hearing about.

In this talk Scott Ambler reviews the challenges faced by established enterprises when transforming to agile and what enterprise agile means in practice.  He then overviews the Disciplined Agile (DA) framework, a pragmatic and context-sensitive approach to enterprise agile, working through how it addresses the realities faced by modern organizations.  Data from recent industry data will be shared to describe what is happening in practice on enterprise agile teams.  Scott then works through advice for transforming your enterprise to become more agile, including the people-process-tools triad and the skills and experience required of enterprise agile team coaches and executive agile coaches.  He ends with an overview of proven strategies for adopting agile in less-than-ideal environments.

Self Selection - Building and Sustaining High Performing Teams

Self-selection is a facilitated process that allows people to exercise autonomy by choosing what they want to work on and who they want to work with. In this workshop participants learn to prepare for a self-selection and experience it in action. “What could possibly go wrong?” debrief rounds out the game. The workshop draws inspiration from “Creating Great Teams” by S. Mamoli and D. Mole as well as Dana's experience of facilitating the self-selection at HBC Digital.

When is the best time to run a self-selection? How to prevent team members from sliding in to the Critter State? How to convince your leadership team to give self-selection a try? How to make a decision about participants? Should you include consultants or employees only?

We will discuss some of the factors that make preparation successful, including clear communication, transparency and early engagement with Product Owners and Scrum Masters of the future teams.

Inspired by “Training from the Back of the Room” framework, the workshop has a variety of hands-on activities, discussions and games to enhance participant’s engagement and provide valuable takeaways.

KEYNOTE: Intent Based Leadership: Create Leaders at Every Level
David Marquet delivers the powerful Intent-Based Leadership Message:  that leaderhsip is not for the select few at the top.  In highly effective organizations, there are leaders at every level.

Creating Intent-Based Leadership organizations results in a workplace where everyone engages and contributes their full intellectual capacity.  A place where people are healthier and happier because they have more control over their work - a place where everyone is a leader.

Intent-Based Leadership organizations create an environment for people to contribute so that they feel valued.  They set clear goals so their people know how to do their jobs.  They push control and decision making down the organization so people take responsibility and rise to the occassion.  They maintain unity of effort by ensuring the supporting pillars of technical competence and organizational clarity are in place.

As a result they achieve:
  • A highly effective organization with superior morale
  • The capacity for greatness in the people and practices of an organization, and remove it from the personality of leaders
  • An organizational culture that creates additional leaders throughout every level of the organization
Intent-Based Leadership starts with rejecting the idea that leadership is for the select few at the top and instead embracing in highly effective organizations, there are leaders at every level. This method of leadership is based on empowerment, not ego, and process, not personality.

Visualizing & Creating High-Performance Customer-Centric Design
Companies that combine agile w/ a customer-centric mindset are 60% more profitable. Increase customer experience innovations within an agile culture.

“Our job, says Amazon CEO Bezos, is to invent new options that nobody’s ever thought of before and see if customers like them.” The World’s Most Innovative Company - Fast Company March 2017 Deloitte and Touche found that customer-centric companies were 60% more profitable compared to companies that were not focused on the customer. Having a strong company wide customer focus is more important than being agile alone to create high-performance design. Learn how to keep the customers needs, emotions and behavioral actions at the center of every design to generate the most value. Harvesting insights from feedback and driving them back into the customer experience with speed at scale makes a company innovative and agile. In an increasingly agile world, do we still need middle managers?  Clearly we do, but middle management and HR departments must adapt or never meet the promise of highly motivated and productive teams.  Some of the changes required may be considered quite radical when compared to traditional HR practices.  But without these changes you will have difficulty attracting and retaining the talent you need.

Unleash the Promise Of Agile – Can Finding Your Bottleneck Cut Your Time in Half?

Could changing one simple thing be the secret to transforming your business, giving you the ability to deliver the highest possible customer value in the shortest amount of time?

Inspired by Steve Denning and Rich Sheridan (Joy Inc.), who consider themselves organizational story tellers and Daniel Vacanti's book, "Actionable Agile Metrics for Predictability",  I will tell the story of how, what I thought was a simple weekend project, turned into a learning opportunity about Lean Agile principles. Join me and listen to the entertaining story of how I unleashed the promise of agile by removing constraints, achieving flow and establishing sustainable throughput of value.

In this fun and engaging workshop, you will learn:

  • The one secret that could be the key to transforming your business
  • How to identify bottlenecks and discover continuous throughput of value and predictability
  • How to optimize system flow and reduce batch and cycle times by half
  • Why optimizing the flow of any system is the single most important factor in the delivery of sustainable value to your customers

I will share my personal journey of discovery, riddled with challenges and constraints, and provide participants an opportunity to explore their constraints and what bottlenecks are impeding their ability to deliver the highest customer value in the shortest amount of time.

When Strategy Needs Agile: Understanding Agile Operating Models

How does Agile fit into your company’s strategic plan?

Often, companies attempt Agile without understanding the impact Agile will have to the three components that are core to the operation of their companies:

(1) Strategy
(2) Operating Model
(3) Execution

When this happens, there are breakdowns in the operation which are evidenced by failed "agile" projects, failed implementations, and frequently "agile fatigue”.  Moreover, executives are not aligned with the VALUE of Agile that enables companies to become marketplace leaders and dominate their competition.

In this session, you’ll learn (a) how Agile Operating Models work; (b) what do breakdowns look like; (c) how to relentlessly tackle the breakdowns using Agile.

You’ll walk away with a new language so that you can articulate Agile as it relates to Operational Strategy. Moreover, you’ll have tools on how to blend Agile into your operating model so that Executives want to get more from your Agile transformation or even better... build better products that your customers will love and at a workplace your teams will enjoy.

Scaling Product Management in an Agile World
What every Product Manager needs to know about scaling Agile.

Product managers play a crucial role in a scaled Agile organization. But what does it truly mean to play this role? Product Owners sit with the scrum team and make the day-to-day decisions that fundamentally shape your products. Product Managers want to make sure the reality of the product direction is in line with what the market needs, but don’t have the time to sit with 10 scrum teams. What is the role of the Product Manager in a scaled agile organization and what role should PMs be playing in defining, executing, and commercializing an organizations product offering? How can Product Managers effectively manage and communicate the product roadmap when hundreds or thousands of stakeholders are involved?

The Lean Grownup: Applying Lean Startup on Established Teams
Eric Ries’ “The Lean Startup” has made a huge impact. But many people shy away from its tenets because they don’t work in a startup. Although Ries mentions some of the ways that his thinking applies even in established companies, his primary focus understandably rests on the true startup. Through our work on a portfolio ranging from greenfield development to 15-year-old legacy products, the teams and I have uncovered some practical techniques for applying Ries' core ideas on teams at any phase of the product life cycle.  In this session, we’ll do a quick overview of Lean Startup concepts, then dive into exercises aimed at actually using the thinking in your day-to-day work.

KEYNOTE: Build a Workplace People Love – Just add Joy

The CIO invited me into his office and closed the door. Before he took me for a tour of his operation, he had a few stories to share. Important stories. Last year’s project was a disaster. Late, lots of quality issues, in short, a failure in every dimension. His boss, the CEO, had just presented him with a very personal ultimatum: deliver the next project by April 4th, “or else”.

“Or else what,” I asked?

His team was burned out and scared. They were a hard-working and dedicated group, but fear and demoralization had set in and he didn’t know what to do next. That’s why he wanted to talk to me, he had heard things about my company, things that seemed too good to be true, but he had to hear them firsthand. He wanted hope, inspiration, and a practical way to get there.

I told him about my own journey from joy to fear to disillusionment back to joy. It was simple, but, of course, simple isn’t easy. I wasn’t sure he and his organization were ready; “manufactured fear” is a powerful drug.

In this talk, I will share with you what I shared with him. I will explore what an intentionally joyful culture must choose as its focus. I will discuss what joy looks like, feels like, how it is organized. Along the way, you will be confronted by paradoxical approaches of how workplace noise increases productivity, how two people at one computer outperforms hero-based organizations 10-to-1, how rigor and discipline emanate from a shared-belief system, how transparency conquers fear, how all of the disciplines you study including agile, lean, and six sigma when done well are really about building human relationships at the intersections of business and technology, between project management and software development, between development and design and how quality can be a natural result of a team built on trust.

This is not a theoretical talk, but rather a talk built from well over a decade of experience of leading a team focused on “the business value of joy”. There will be lots of room for discussion with the audience. The audience will begin to understand why thousands of people make the journey to Ann Arbor, Michigan every year to see The Menlo Software Factory firsthand, and why so many more are reading about it in Joy, Inc. – How We Built A Workplace People Love.
